“So, Slayer,” Spike said into her hair as she nestled against him, “what did you say to the big poof when you found out he’d been lying to you about me?” He stroked one hand down her back, and waited. “Did you hurt him?”

“You lied too,” she muttered, poking him in his side hard enough to make him grunt. “At least by omission. You let me think you were dead. You’re not much better than he is.”

“To be honest, love, I didn’t tell him to lie to you. I just thought if I wasn’t there, you wouldn’t have to—”

She stiffened and raised her head. “If you’re about to say something that means you believe I would have done anything but throw my arms around you and start crying, I think you should bite your tongue right now. Hard!” She glared at him until she could read the shame and regret she needed to see.

“You’re both responsible for letting me grieve. You, by not calling me to tell me you didn’t go down with Sunnydale, and then hiding from me and not coming to me after you and Angel tried to take on an entire army of demons. So, twice! Twice you let me grieve when I shouldn’t have had to.

“And Angel, for taking advantage of your insecurity and not telling me you survived—either time. His arrogance, and your lack of faith in me, meant I had two years of being unhappy for no good reason.”

Author's Note: These drabbles are follow-ups to my fic "A Place Beyond the Rains." Basic details from that that you need to know is that Buffy was stuck in a pocket dimension for five years working as a waiter in a demon-run truck stop and Spike (who'd worked as a bartender to support Dawn) saved her by convincing her that she needed to let go of a set concept of home in order to move on. Then the rains magically carried them away. It's a weird fic.
These four drabbles are setting during their dimension-hopping journey home.

She sat alone in the back of the bus. Everyone else had limped into rooms and heaved themselves onto beds, but she sat alone in the back of the bus.

She couldn’t take her eyes off the headlights rushing past on the highway just beyond the parking lot.

She kept hoping to see a vehicle wheel into the parking lot, coming from the north. Turning in at the last second, driving like the hounds of hell were in pursuit.

She didn’t know what vehicle it would be. She imagined he’d steal something, flash some fang to scare some poor guy away. Probably some college linebacker type, out with a tiny cheerleader. He always got annoyed by people like that.

She knew he wasn’t coming. She’d seen him burn. Seen him lit in a pure light that couldn’t exist in reality, a light that burned away all the darkness in that horrifying place.

She knew he wasn’t coming.

But she sat alone in the back of the bus while the slayers and Scoobies slept and cried. She sat alone in the back of the bus, dry eyed, watching for a car to turn in at the last second.

She sat alone.

Hello! So the last fic I posted was back in November 2020, when I was about 6 months into long covid. I am now over two years into what is now looking more like chronic disability than a temporary illness, and has already involved two separate 4-month stints of being too ill to get out of bed and do basic self-care, let alone work. (Don't get covid, kids.)

I had hoped and planned to submit something substantive for this spring's seasonal-spuffy, but sadly I've just been too ill. So I thought for the 25th anniversary theme, I'd submit a new chapter to a story I started way-back-when for the 25th round. It's kind of thematic, in a half-rhyme kind of way.

Many thanks to everyone who still cares about this story, despite the time between updates! If you no longer remember the details, the whole thing (excluding this chapter) is available here on AO3. (I expect this will be most of you.)
