After the firmly happy end to the last chapter, this ending was heartbreaking and horrible and hopeful in turns. This story kept surprising me and the explanation for the pregnancy was one of the surprises. There's so much regret in what might have been, but the manifestation of Spike and Buffy's twisted relationship was horrifying and emotionally devastating.
Starting out in the emotionally charged hospital scene, Spike clutching their "Monster" to his chest, scrambling to dispose of his horror movie parody "son," a son he'd had to kill, was heartbreaking. He'd allowed himself to imagine this was all going to be okay. How terribly wrong he was.
Buffy trying to get through to him, to cajole him back to her, to try to recapture the bliss of hope, seemed to be falling on deaf ears. It feels like Spike's too shattered for hope. Too broken to fix. I hope I'm wrong about that.
This was a stellar, thought provoking read. Thanks for sharing it.
