Spike's agitation and weariness were beautifully conveyed, and awakening to the bonfire and the image of his mother had a dreamlike quality. Until he pinched himself!
The Powers pushing Spike along his own spiritual journey years earlier than canon gives me hope that this time around Buffy won't have to suffer as much as in canon.
