I loved the beginning of this. The style put me in mind of the beginning of a children's book, James and the Giant Peach or The lion, The Witch et al, which set the fantasy for me.
A name as hard and sharp as Buffy's was soft and silly, and just as deceiving. Very much liked this and also --she'd seen one of those things that she wanted, or at least the possibility of it. Normality. Not that she regretted any of the choices she'd made. becuase that speaks to me of your Buffy and she is consistent as is your Spike.
