I've been trying to think of how Spike would have thought himself through the next couple of years. I think he'd put his heart into reuniting with Dru, and then be so frustrated when he couldn't control his interest in Buffy or make Dru his ideal love again. The initial s4 bits are easy enough, he's back to make an impact of some kind - and then post-chip he's thrown back into his default of coming to the Scoobies. They did kind of betray him here though, even if it led to his survival in this timeline. So some hostility is likely. I think by the end of the Gift, he knows she's done, even if he wishes it could be different. Maybe. A little mind-bending, but not totally bonkers as an AU. Thinky, anyway.
