Spike reminds me of Bothari, a character in Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series. Both Joyce in the early seasons and Buffy in S7 fill a bit of the same role towards Spike that Cordelia Vorkosigan filled toward Bothari: by believing in him, they're creating a man who can be believed in.
