Spike & Joyce both need to take care of someone. Once Spike knows he can be of help to her (plus get in his recommended daily dose of violence) he perks right up. It's always more involved than you think, though, and he finds himself going farther for her than he would have ever thought. He's an all-or-nothing kind of guy. I'm glad that their friendship was a joy to you, too!

I did start with the ending, and thought it would be plausible that Spike's presence at Revello Drive would dramatically alter the way Who Are You? played out. And now, Spike's got someone else he needs to take care of (but don't tell Buffy that!)
