Wow lovely. It's like the first human William was an egg, the unsouled Spike was a caterpillar, the souled Spike was a cocoon, and the final William was the butterfly. All in essence were the same, but devolpmental different.
Buffy still misses Spike as a caterpillar and cocoon. They were both evolving, but William is the final form. He is what he is.
