Well, this is certainly a side of Spike we didn't see in Season 7 - and yet, it works. Much as I loved that season (oh, the angst of missed opportunities!), I've often wondered what Spike would act like if he actually grew a pair. He doesn't voice his opinions in this story, but it's close enough for government work.

As for Buffy, apparently she thinks Egypt is still a nice place to be. Le sigh.
